Nature, Art & Habitat Residency, An ECO-Laboratory of Multidisciplinary Practice, located in Taleggio Valley, Bergamo, Italy, is a summer program that aims to unfold and display a sensitive type of culture that relates to nature as a source of inspiration and a measure of available resources. The ultimate goal of NAHR is to unveil intimate links among all living organisms for more resilient development in which humans and nature are shown to coexist.

With the onset of the Anthropocene and considering current pressing climatic threats, the NAHR program supports deep investigations into this environment and its functions by challenging creative and critical minds to produce innovative interpretations of nature as a resilient but fragile resource and setting. We hope to receive proposals from across multiple disciplines, and we anticipate that projects will be focused on deepening awareness of how humans can engage responsibly in shaping the future of our natural spheres.

By looking macroscopically at the Earth’s ecosystems – climate, geology, soil, water, air, sun – and then reading microscopically the Valley’s natural characteristics, including flowers, ferns, bees, pebbles, barns, villagers, shops, and more, NAHR intends to invite participants to investigate different natural components each year: their felt presence and integrated coexistence in the Taleggio Valley. We ask, and expect to challenge, participants to approach their surroundings in novel ways.

In addition to free participation in the program (residency and workshops) and free accommodations, NAHR will provide to the selected residents support for intensive community exchange in a verdant and ecologically-diverse, environmental setting. Historically, the Alpine context of the Valley has encouraged settlement that aligns with the principles of sustainability. It offers a variety of topographies which invite investigation, and which we hope will inspire sensitive, multi-disciplinary approaches giving form and focus to finished projects.

NAHR TOPICS
NAHR annually dedicates space and time for participants to work on a specific elemental natural theme, to examine the resiliency of the ecological systems specially connected to the Taleggio and Santa Ynez Valley. The past years were dedicated to the basic natural resources of the Valleys. The selected topics for the residencies were:

2016_The Woods, a primary natural feature of the Valley, representing a sustainable, renewable yet depleting resource.

2017_Rock and Stone: which represent the substrate of mountain life, giving shape to the natural landscape and conferring character to the vernacular built environment.

2018_Water : Vital Flux, Energy in Transformation. WATER is a source of life and a means of access, energy, sustenance, and survival in the Val Taleggio landscape.

2019_Grasses and Pastures: Imagining a Regenerative Economy of Cheese. The residency focused on the socio-cultural and economic processes of manufacturing cheese in the Valley, and on the complex interrelationships with the environment.

Nature, Art & Habitat Residency: ECO-Laboratorio di pratiche multidisciplinari, a Sottochiesa in Val Taleggio, Bergamo-Lombardia è un programma internazionale di residenza estiva, aperto per bando ad artisti, ricercatori e scienziati impegnati in progetti di studio ed emulazione della natura.

In considerazione delle minacce climatiche attuali associate all’era contemporanea dell’Antropocene e sostenuto da una forte sensibilità per la natura quale fonte di ispirazione e misura delle risorse disponibili, NAHR si propone di investigare i profondi legami tra gli organismi viventi alla ricerca di uno sviluppo resiliente in cui esseri umani e natura convivono in reciproco supporto.

Osservando l'ecosistema Terra - clima, acqua, aria, vegetazione, geologia, - e promuovendo un profondo ripensamento del rapporto con il contesto ambientale, NAHR indaga anno per anno le diverse componenti naturali, la loro presenza e la loro coesistenza integrata nella Val Taleggio, spingendo menti creative a produrre interpretazioni innovative e soluzioni resilienti. Le multidisciplinari proposte progettuali elaborate durante la residenza, intendono riflettere in forma consapevole la centralità del contributo umano per la valorizzazione della natura.

NAHR, oltre ad offrire ai residenti selezionati tramite concorso, alloggio e partecipazione gratuita alla residenza e ai workshop, è propositivamente in grado di fornire un rapporto privilegiato con l’ambiente naturale oltre che l’opportunità di condividere il percorso con la comunità locale e i partecipanti. Il contesto prealpino della valle, da sempre orientato al modello di sviluppo sostenibile e resiliente, offre una varietà di risorse utili alla ricerca multidisciplinare, supportando la realizzazione di progetti condivisi.

In parallelo al programma di residenza, ogni estate NAHR organizza in partnership con l’Ecomuseo Val Taleggio e con il patrocinio delle Istituzioni locali, alcuni workshop tematici a chiusura dei quali si terranno eventi pubblici a restituzione e condivisione dei contenuti.

I TEMI
NAHR dedica annualmente il programma ad un tema legato ad un elemento naturale specifico, in modo da esaminare la resilienza nei diversi aspetti dei sistemi ecologici della Valle Taleggio e Santa Ynez. Negli anni gli argomenti sono stati :

2016_ Il bosco: elemento caratteristico della valle e preziosa risorsa rinnovabile

2017_ Roccia e pietra: formano il substrato del paesaggio naturale e conferiscono carattere vernacolare all'ambiente costruito.

2018_ Acqua: fonte di vita, elemento primordiale, essenziale e indispensabile per ogni organismo vivente. Con il suo fluire plasma gli elementi naturali, genera diversificazione, habitat, ecosistemi, intaglia il paesaggio e crea accessibilità, fornisce sostanze nutritive e fonti di energia.
