The ultimate goal of NAHR is to unveil intimate links among all living organisms for more resilient development in which humans and nature are shown to coexist. With the onset of the Anthropocene and considering current pressing climatic threats, the NAHR program supports deep investigations into this environment and its functions by challenging creative and critical minds to produce innovative interpretations of nature as a resilient but fragile resource and setting. We hope to receive proposals from across multiple disciplines, and we anticipate that projects will be focused on deepening awareness of how humans can engage responsibly in shaping the future of our natural spheres. By looking macroscopically at the Earth’s ecosystems – climate, geology, soil, water, air, sun – and then reading microscopically the Valley’s natural characteristics, including flowers, ferns, bees, pebbles, barns, villagers, shops, and more, NAHR intends to invite participants to investigate different natural components each year: their felt presence and integrated coexistence in the Taleggio Valley. We ask, and expect to challenge, participants to approach their surroundings in novel ways. In addition to free participation in the program (residency and workshops) and free accommodations, NAHR will provide to the selected residents support for intensive community exchange in a verdant and ecologically-diverse, environmental setting. Historically, the Alpine context of the Valley has encouraged settlement that aligns with the principles of sustainability. It offers a variety of topographies which invite investigation, and which we hope will inspire sensitive, multi-disciplinary approaches giving form and focus to finished projects. WATER is a source of life and a means of access, energy, sustenance, and survival in the Val Taleggio landscape. 2019_Grasses and Pastures: Imagining a Regenerative Economy of Cheese. As we enter the fourth year, the residency will focus on the socio-cultural and economic processes of manufacturing cheese in the Valley, and on the complex interrelationships with the environment.&nbsp; 2020_Animals: Interdependence Between Species. NAHR explores where and how species meet, and intersect, to co-create ecosystems in this post-human, post-anthropocentric era. An international jury will select the residents based on their proposals. Selection criteria includes feasibility, originality, and overall quality of the proposals. Each NAHR residency is supplied without fees, and lodging is provided for the month of June. Residencies will be awarded according to independent project proposals that best explore the 2026 topic Minerals: Our (in)organic Roots. Candidates are asked to consider how their proposals might best explore ways to build dynamic relationships between the Valley’s ecological resources, socio-cultural practices, and the built environment. Proposals should consider the Taleggio Valley (see also the California call) as a case study and demonstrate an understanding of the residency as an opportunity to develop individual research paths. Proposals must aim to explore in-depth the domains of nature and landscape alongside the identity and memory of the Valley situated in the heart of the Orobie Alps. Approaches may include the tangible and intangible heritage of rural buildings, artifacts, work, as well as oral stories, local knowledge and know-how, traditions, crafts, flavors, and habits of the local population and communities that participate, legitimize, perpetuate, and generate an in-situ cultural logic of people and place. Selection priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate both a direct engagement with the surrounding nature and the human habitat, through clearly articulated objectives and methods, and the ability to produce an artifact such as an installation, a thematic path, a sculpture, paintings, texts, food recipes, etc. as new types of landmarks in the Valley's territory. Applicants need to demonstrate via their portfolio a strong commitment to research and investigation, as well as demonstrate how the production of previous work relates to the scope of NAHR. Regenerative Economy This approach encourages the study of local culture and production/exchange relations that extend to observations on local ecosystems in order to generate economic models based on concepts of restoration, regeneration and circularity. These models are ideally exportable to future developments at both local and global scales, promoting a resilient use of natural and cultural resources, and eliminating obsolete concepts such as waste and pollution. 2. Bio-Inspired Design and Architecture The development and/or creation of projects and artifacts inspired by form, functions and processes found in the nature of the Valley. 3. Body Performing Nature Artwork production and critical embodied investigations that articulate our relationship to nature, landscape, sustainability and ecology though creative movement of the human body. Proposals may include all types of embodied performances, dance, and site specific choreographies. 4. Designed Futures, Technology &amp; New Media The use of emerging technology tools/engines such as virtual and augmented reality, 3D printing, scanning, artificial intelligence, sensor-based systems, robotics, and simulations to investigate the shifting boundary between technology and nature, infrastructure and ecosystems. kick-off the summer residency programme titled: 'MINERALS: Scaffolders that Matter'. Following past years topics, Fire, Air, Animals, Grass, Water, Stone and Woods, the eight edition of the NAH_Workshop analyzes the subject "MINERALS” an added element of the Taleggio Valley (BG) and the region are large. You will be sure to enjoy a wide array of cross-cutting interventions considering the different scientific and environmental dimensions of biodiversity, the wellbeing of the biosphere from a local and global perspective and renewable resources, creating connections between the project areas of design, landscape architecture and the development of resilience systems and of a regenerative economy. This workshop offers an opportunity for an extended discussion between different disciplines to thoughtfully re-examine the human-nature relationship. To seek out possible circular solutions based on the principles of regenerative economy, sustainability, resilience and empathy in light of the increasingly tangible consequences of the Anthropocene geological era, defined by the fact that human activity has been the main cause for territorial and climatic changes. Taleggio Valley represents an example of how, over the centuries, the communion of elements such as its biodiversity (nature) and its people (culture), have been able to generate a rich tradition of local production of goods (e.g. subsistence economies, dairy production, landscape, building heritage, etc.) while respecting the territory. The workshop does not only consist of round table discussions, but also of guided visits to specific towns and farms in the surrounding area: pastures and meadows, wooded areas and mountain pastures, whose morphology and ecosystems are peculiar to the landscape system of the Orobie Prealps, and are intimately connected to the local history. Over the centuries, the distinct features of this valley have facilitated the development of an integrated production chain, based on traditional techniques and technological innovations. In fact, the field trips are designed to gain understanding about the capacity for resilience in the area, which has been key for its sustainable development over time. Although today - as in many Alpine and pre-alpine areas - there is a strong demographic crisis, there is still great capacity for the development of a strong circular economy. Taking Taleggio Valley as our source of inspiration, the interventions and conversations will aim to define and promote applicable methodologies for the regenerative circular economy, so as to serve as a model for universalised ECO-nomic and ECO-logical processes. During the three-day workshop, we will discuss the role of Empathy in bringing about the necessary change towards a more sustainable world. In particular, we will analyze the potential role of art and cultural practices in educating and supporting artists and other cultural agents so that their work becomes a vehicle of this message, as well as implementing empathic practices towards the Other (other understood as all living organisms), in the search of the most widespread impact. A questa tematica sono dedicati i tre giorni di studio e attività (6-7-8 giugno) della settima edizione del workshop NAHW, interessanti per chiunque operi nella ricerca interdisciplinare: biologi, architetti, geologi, naturalisti, forestali, agronomi, gastronomi, antropologi, artisti, e chiunque abbia a cuore il tema della sostenibilità socio-ambientale. Il workshop si propone come un’occasione allargata di confronto tra differenti discipline per rivedere strategicamente il rapporto uomo - natura, e per ricercare possibili soluzioni circolari, alla base dei principi di economia rigenerativa, sostenibilità, resilienza e empatia, in considerazione degli effetti sempre più tangibili dell’era geologica dell’Antropocene, che riconosce nell’uomo e nella sua attività le cause principali delle modifiche territoriali e climatiche. Infatti, le uscite sul campo sono particolarmente finalizzate alla comprensione degli aspetti di resilienza del territorio, che hanno consentito nel corso del tempo il suo sviluppo sostenibile seppur di origine estrattiva. Seppur oggi sussista - come in molti contesti alpini e prealpini - una forte crisi demografica, rimangono vive le principali fonti di sviluppo dalle ricche potenzialità per un’economia rigenerativa forte e rispettosa della biodiversita’. His project attunes to the shared emotional and sensory experiences of wildfires, and the ways these sensations have shaped public discourses on risk perception, catastrophe management and global warming. Marvin Heine&nbsp;is an environmental sociologist deeply interested in the senses, their phenomenology, mediations and politics. He is currently enrolled in teh Phd pgrogram at the IRI THESys, Humboldt- Universität zu Berlin. His current research focuses on the influence of sense perception on socialization, as well as the transformation of human-environment systems. Here the relationship with fire is experienced fully and every material is essential and part of a cycle. This way of living and being in the world inspires the trio and moves them in the creation of a ceramic kiln conceived not as a static element but as a body that lives in honor of a circular existence, where each fragment that composes it will have a second life after the firing. Anna, Benedetta and Giacomo wish to ask themselves if it is possible through the magical powers of fire to give shape to new possibilities of ingenious and creative coexistence. Anna Villa is an artist working in the field of visual art with clay exploring sculpture potential in different contexts. Benedetta Repetto studied Sculpture in Genova. She approached pottery by attending different studios and classes in Liguria and now she works in her pottery place and teaches classes, especially to children. Giacomo Scapin is a craftsman specialized into pottery wheel with interests in experimental firing. Forno Circolare In montagna c’è ancora un forte senso di economia rurale, dove tutto ha una funzione e la vita è ricca di significati concreti e simbolici. Qui il rapporto con il fuoco è vissuto con pienezza ed ogni materia è essenziale e fa parte di un ciclo. Questo modo di vivere e di essere nel mondo ispira il trio e li smuove nella creazione di un forno per ceramica concepito non come un elemento statico ma come un corpo che vive in onore di un’esistenza circolare, dove ogni frammento che lo compone avrà una seconda vita dopo la cottura. Anna, Benedetta e Giacomo desiderano chiedersi se è possibile attraverso i poteri magici del fuoco dare forma a nuove possibilità di coesistenza ingegnosa e creativa. Anna Villa è un'artista che lavora nel campo dell'arte visiva con l'argilla esplorando le potenzialità della scultura in diversi contesti. Benedetta Repetto ha studiato Scultura a Genova. Burak Korkmaz is an independent information designer and media artist, specializing in data visualization, sonification, and the phenomena surrounding data. The co-creation of the audiovisual piece "Guadiana in 4 Movements" showcases his expertise in data sonification and climate change scenarios. Burak's interests revolve around sustainability, the Anthropocene, and exploring the intersections of art and science. Informed by local knowledge, but guided by firsthand experience, this photographic series explores how fire is deployed culturally in Val Taleggio, bringing together images of wood burned through NAHR community events, the residue of forestry and the evidence of arson. Fire can be understood in this context for its cultural value, destructive power, restorative capability and omnipresence. Andreas Rutkauskas is a landscape photographer and visual artist currently residing on the unceded territory of the Syilx (Kelowna). His practice relies heavily on fieldwork, and he is most excited by the production phase of any project, which sees him getting dirty and experimenting with new technology in a forest or on a mountainside. L’onnipresenza del fuoco può essere compresa in questo contesto per il suo valore culturale, il suo potere distruttivo e la sua capacità riparativa. Andreas Rutkauskas vive e lavora nella valle di Okanagan in Canada e insegna fotografia all’Università della British Columbia. Elemental Metamorphosis is a sculptural installation created after a period of exploration of the surroundings of NAHR and the personalities connected to the residency. During long walks, I collected traces of burnt logs and branches, from which I chose the most intact one. From this piece of charred wood, I began to think about how to restore dignity and value to something that is typically not considered to have aesthetic qualities. Through casting, I halted a process of model annihilation and transformed it into natural wax, a material that relates to fire and its use in everyone's domestic dimension. Federica Zianni is an italian visual artist working mainly with sculpture and installation. She returned at Brera Academy in 2022 as a professor of Foundry Techniques. Since 2018, she has participated in nationally significant awards and residencies, and published her first monograph with Vanillaedizioni. She participates in international projects and is a lecturer at Huafan University in Taiwan. Her works are included in public and private collections. In 2024, she inaugurates her first public sculpture in Lenno (CO). Metamorfosi elementale La legna bruciata è una traccia di civiltà che attraversa la storia dell’uomo nella sua evoluzione. Elemental Metamorphosis è un’installazione scultorea realizzata dopo un periodo di esplorazione dei dintorni di NAHR e delle personalità legate alla residenza. Durante delle lunghe camminate ho collezionato delle tracce di tronchi e rami bruciati tra i quali ho scelto il più integro. Da questo pezzo di legno carbonizzato ho iniziato a pensare a come ridare dignità e valore a qualcosa che di norma non è ritenuto abbia qualità estetica. Attraverso il calco ho fermato un processo di annullamento del modello e l’ho trasformato in cera naturale, un materiale che ha a che fare col fuoco e il suo impiego nella dimensione domestica di ognuno. Federica Zianni è un’artista visiva italiana che lavora prevalentemente con la scultura e l’installazione. Nel 2022 torna a Brera con l'incarico di docente di Tecniche di Fonderia. Dal 2018 partecipa a premi e a residenze di rilievo nazionale e pubblica la sua prima monografia con Vanillaedizioni. Partecipa a progetti internazionali ed è lecturer presso la Huafan University di Taiwan. Le sue opere sono presenti in collezioni pubbliche e private. Quota Iscrizione: Il costo di partecipazione alle attività giornaliere e' di € 250,00 a bambino, costo alloggio escluso (dettagli nella brochure) Ogni bambino deve essere necessariamente accompagnato da almeno un adulto (genitore o persona delegata). Desideriamo portare i bambini in natura per far loro comprendere la biodiversità immergendosi nell’ ambiente naturale stesso, per osservare, giocando, il ricco ecosistema delle nostre montagne. I bambini vengono invitati a svolgere attività collettive di osservazione, descrizione sensoriale e restituzione creativa. In piccoli gruppi svolgono attività di disegno naturalistico, modellazione con plastilina degli animali osservati, tessitura con fibre naturali per la creazione di un tappeto vegetale. Tutti questi elementi compongono un teatro che sarà animato dalle voci dei bambini, attraverso una narrazione spontanea delle giornate vissute insieme. Animator* di diverse discipline si occupano di introdurre le attività e facilitare la restituzione a fine seminario a condivisione dell’esperienza vissuta insieme.
