Perform and explore with us at NAHR’s Eco-Theatre Workshop, where we embody and perform the Harlequin in nature. Working within the ethos of NAHR this is a participatory, collaborative and creative short but intense exploration of the Commedia dell'Arte character Harlequin in the beautiful natural surroundings of Val Taleggio (Bergamo, Italian Preapls), in the land of its very own birthplace (https://mercatorumpriula.eu/teatro/). We will explore this archetypal character through performance with our voices, as an embodiment, polemic, partner or even aspect of the natural world. We will work with the voice grounded in operatic techniques. This land also has a rich operatic tradition, epitomised by the work of Gaetano Donizetti (the Bergamo opera house being his namesake “Teatro Donizetti”), whose opera buffa made use of the Commedia dell’Arte characters as a key ingredient in the development of his iconic works.

NAHR’s approach

By embodying nature through the Harlequin we will search for a disruptive anthropomorphism discussing the metamodern approach to theatre that allows us to recall the need to present a deeper, more profound and ethically driven practice in theatre and performance. We will recontextualise the Harlequin for now, going beyond the traditional character and connecting it to wider territories, especially considering how the character has migrated across the world.

As described by Virginie Magnat (2020), the use of the voice requires an imaginative engagement with the environment that necessarily extends the human experience to that of a wider ecosystem. Through investigation of the voice based on character and interaction with the environment, alongside discussions around the work of metatheatre practices today, we will create a group form of eco-opera that searches for ways to de-centre the human through engaging with the collective and transpersonal experiences and stories.

The workshop is also situated in NAHR’s annual theme, Minerals: Our (in)organic Roots. The Harlequin’s role as a servant can also take many changing forms, parallelling the important morphological, and necessary, role of minerals in the composition of our environments and the development of life. It can also be explored as an element of local traditional craft practices (e.g. carpentry or stonemasonry), especially within the regenerative economy.

Calendar

The long weekend workshop, led by singer and researcher Roxanne Korda, will explore the creation of theatrical performance with a focus on creative processes such as the Halprin RSVP cycles (1970), or reflective practice-based processes of Smith & Dean. We will explore the voice and body as inspired by the work of practitioners such as Roy Hart (1999), Kristin Linklater (1976), and Zygmunt Molik (2010), whilst taking inspiration from practices, such as Pauline Oliveros’ slow walking, to follow the paved Harlequin’s trails of the Val Taleggio.

The intention of the workshop will be to work collaboratively and individually in cycles to create embodied site and subject specific performances inspired both by the Harlequin archetype and the natural world. We will:

• Take scores from the Harlequin and our environments, to build performances which engage with the natural surroundings, walking in the footprints of the Commedia Dell’Arte.
• Perform to, and with each other, making use of each participant’s skills and expertise as another core part of the creative process.
• Explore in outdoor and indoor spaces, making sure to take inspiration from a slow listening and deep engagement with the local environment. 
• Have time to develop work collaboratively alongside focused individual creative development also.

Alongside the work we will have the chance to enjoy meals together in local restaurants, and walks across the stunning landscapes. Each participant will have access to their own self catered apartment with kitchen workspace, bedroom, and bathroom. Participants will be required to pay for their own food, at the delicious local restaurants or grocery shops, and laundry. Application details:

We seek applications from anyone interested in embodied performance, from artists, to performers, to students, to enthusiasts. We ask that all participants are generous with their skills, open to collaboration, happy to perform in nature/the outdoors, and keen to use their voices. 

No opera experience required although some singing and performance experience useful. If you love to sing and create, join us!

Official workshop language English, Italian is not a must, but a plus.

NAHR is hosting and partially subsidizing this workshop. The remaining cost for the participant is:

THE NAHR TEAM

Dr Roxanne Korda bio:

Roxanne is an opera singer and librettist. She likes to explore; presenting new opera, on esoteric subject matter, in unique spaces, to different audiences. She co-founded the company Infinite Opera in order to combine her love of science, philosophy and music.

She has completed a practice-based PhD at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC), exploring how to use science in creating new operatic characters and narrative. She has a MMus in Vocal Performance (Distinction) from RBC. She has presented papers at among others conferences: Music Since 1900, Opera for Peace: COP26, and The Ballad of Goodwill at the Academy for Art and Design in Gothenburg. Her work has been published by the Academy of Arts Novi Sad, and in July this year she will have a paper published in AI & Society Journal. She has also been editor for Transect of Coexistence: Inquiry into Nature Art and Habitat (ListLab Publishers).

Her libretti have been performed across the UK, including at the Téte  Téte Opera Festival (Entanglement!, Besse, The Monk of the River and The Monster of Gao) Edinburgh Fringe 2023 (Lipote: An Interconnected Journey), and have been presented in festivals globally including the Luleå Biennale 2022 (Authoodening: The Rise of Captain Swing). Her work has been commissioned by RBC (Entanglement!), the Commonwealth Games (The Flowering Desert), and Birmingham Opera Company ([shut]). As a performer and theatre maker has received funding from Arts Council England, British Council Connections Through Culture, Help Musicians UK, and the UKRI.

Roxanne also works with the Welsh National Opera on their touring programme of concerts to severely disabled young people. She is a varied performer whose previous roles range from classical to contemporary including: Norina in Don Pasquale, Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte and Entropy in Entanglement! An Entropic Tale.

Asia Asperti, is NAHR onsite Coordinator/Manager. Asia is completing her university studies in Art History and has experience in organizational roles within contemporary art institutions. She is now exploring ways to integrate hands-on practices into her professional and personal development.

Sara Invernizzi is a museographer and writer living in the Italian Orobie Prealps. She is hugely knowledgeable about the local ecology and  the cultural, economic and regenerative role of the woodlands and patures.

Ilaria Mazzoleni is an architect, educator, author, and NAHR Founder. Her research focus is biomimicry, where design and architecture is inspired by nature. She was raised in the Valley, and acts as a liaison to the community and other experts in the area.

Partecipa al Workshop di Eco-Teatro di NAHR, dove incarniamo e mettiamo in scena L’Arlecchino in natura. Lavorando a passo con la filosofia  di NAHR, questo workshop creativo, partecipativo, collaborativo e’ incentrato sul  personaggio della Commedia dell'Arte: Arlecchino nello splendido ambiente della Val Taleggio (Bergamo), suo territorio natale (https://mercatorumpriula.eu/teatro/). La terra bergamasca, con la sua ricca tradizione operistica esemplificata dall'opera di Gaetano Donizetti (il teatro dell'opera di Bergamo con il suo omonimo "Teatro Donizetti"), la cui opera buffa ha utilizzato i personaggi della Commedia dell'Arte come ingrediente chiave nello sviluppo delle sue opere iconiche.

Esploreremo questo personaggio archetipico cercando di incarnarlo attraverso la performance e lavoreremo con la voce applicando tecniche operistiche.

L'approccio di NAHR

Incarnando la natura attraverso l'Arlecchino, ne cercheremo un suo antropomorfismo discutendo l'approccio metamoderno al teatro che ci consente di ricordare la necessità di presentare una pratica teatrale e di performance piu’ etica. Ricontestualizzeremo l'Arlecchino, andando oltre il personaggio tradizionale e collegandolo anche a territori più ampi.

Come descritto da Virginie Magnat (2020), l'uso della voce richiede un impegno immaginativo con l'ambiente che necessariamente estende l'esperienza umana a quella di un ecosistema più ampio. Attraverso l'indagine vocale, basata sul personaggio, e l'interazione con l'ambiente naturale, insieme alle conversazioni sul lavoro delle pratiche metateatrali odierne, creeremo un’ eco-opera di gruppo che cerca modi per decentrare l'umano attraverso l'impegno con le esperienze e le storie collettive e transpersonali.

Il workshop è anche situato nel tema annuale di NAHR Minerali: Le nostre radici (in)organiche (https://nahr.it/Current-Program). Lo stato sociale dell'Arlecchino si collega bene allo status chimico/fisico dei minerali, critici ma invisibili alla struttura materiale del mondo che supportano. Può anche essere esplorato come un elemento delle pratiche artigianali tradizionali locali (ad esempio falegname o scalpellino), specialmente all'interno di un’aspirazione ad una economia rigenerativa.

Calendario

Il workshop di 4 giorni (24-27 luglio), condotto dalla cantante e ricercatrice inglese Roxanne Korda, esplorerà la creazione di performance teatrali con un focus su processi creativi come i cicli RSVP di Anna Halprin (1970) o processi basati sulla pratica riflessiva di Smith & Dean. Esploreremo l’uso di voce e corpo ispirati dal lavoro di Kristin Linklater (1976), Zygmunt Molik (2010), e Roy Hart (1999) traendo anche ispirazione da pratiche come la camminata lenta di Pauline Oliveros, per seguire i sentieri della Val Taleggio sulle orme del nostro Arlecchino contemporaneo.

L'intenzione del workshop laboratorio e’ quella di lavorare su 3 cicli, in modo sia collaborativo che individuale, per creare performance specifiche, ispirate sia dall'archetipo di Arlecchino che al mondo naturale. Noi:

-       Rivisiteremo brogliacci ispirati dalla Commedia dell'Arte.

-       Ci esibiremo utilizzando le competenze e l'esperienza di ogni partecipante  

-       Esploreremo spazi all'aperto assicurandoci di trarre ispirazione da un ascolto lento e profondo dell’ecologia locale.   

-       Svilupperemo il lavoro in modo collaborativo, dando anche spazio al lavoro e alla ricerca individuale.

Insieme lavoreremo, passeggeremo, prepareremo cibi e ceneremo nei ristoranti della zona. Ogni partecipante residente avrà un appartamento privato:  camera, cucina e bagno. dott. ssa Roxanne Korda:
Roxanne è cantante lirica, librettista e ricercatrice. Ha co-fondato la compagnia Infinite Opera per coniugare il suo amore per la scienza, la filosofia e la musica. Ha completato il dottorato di ricerca applicata presso il Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC), esplorando come usare la scienza nella creazione di nuovi personaggi e narrazioni operistiche. Ha conseguito un MMus in Vocal Performance (Distinction) presso il RBC. Ha presentato relazioni a conferenze tra le altre: Music Since 1900, Opera for Peace: COP26 e The Ballad of Goodwill presso l'Academy for Art and Design di Gothenburg. Il suo lavoro è stato pubblicato dall'Academy of Arts Novi Sad e a luglio di quest'anno pubblicherà un articolo su AI & Society Journal. Sara Invernizzi museografa e scrittrice che vive nelle Prealpi Orobie italiane. È estremamente esperta dell'ecologia locale e del ruolo culturale, economico e rigenerativo dei boschi e dei pascoli.

Ilaria Mazzoleni architetto, educatrice, autrice e fondatrice di NAHR. La sua ricerca si concentra sulla biomimetica, dove il design e l'architettura sono ispirati dalla natura. È cresciuta nella valle e funge da collegamento con la comunità e altri esperti della zona.
